Words and Photography by Gary Donaldson

This is a photo of the Grand Canyon from the south rim of the National Park. Even though it is late March, a seven inch snowfall occurred a few days before our visit. This is not unusual for terrain at seven thousand feet of elevation. The snow adds to the stunning visual composition of this location.

Geology of The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. It is an awe-inspiring natural wonder found in northern Arizona. It stretches 277 miles long , up to 18 miles wide, and is over a mile deep. The immense scale and detailed layering of red, orange, and brown rocks are impressive. They reveal a rich geological history in The Grand Canyon. This history dates back nearly 2 billion years.

The canyon’s dramatic vistas are especially striking at sunrise and sunset. The sunlight’s angle and soft luminance brings its rugged cliffs and deep valleys to life. This golden light creates saturated colors and interesting shadows.

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon offers some of the best and easily accessible spots for photography.

Here is a list of 5 spots along the South Rim that are excellent to snap your own photo of the Grand Canyon. All of these spots are accessible via free shuttle buses circulating through Grand Canyon Village.

  1. Trailview Overlook– This is the first bus stop after departing the village. It provides a unique perspective of the famous El Tovar Hotel. The view is across an arm of the south rim canyon.
  2. Yavapai Point – Located near the Geology Museum (a must visit), Yavapai Point offers one of the best panoramic views. There is a clear view down the Colorado River from here. This is a great location for sunset images. It also offers excellent geological details for close cropped compositions.
  3. Hopi Point – Hopi Point extends further into the canyon than most viewpoints, providing dramatic panoramic views of the canyon. This is one of the best locations for sunset images.
  4. Grandview Point – The previous 4 viewpoints are located west of the south rim village. Grandview Point is east of the village and accessible by bus, as well. It offers a wide, dramatic view of the canyon along with interesting foreground elements like twisted trees and layered rocks. It’s an ideal location for creative compositions during the golden hours.
  5. Pima Point – Located near the end of Hermit Road, this is one of the quieter spots. It has sweeping views of the canyon and the Colorado River. Pima Point is another great location for sunset photography. If you’ve made it this far west, you must visit Hermit’s Rest. It includes a beautiful stone building constructed in 1914. Besides magnificent views, the building features one of the most incredible stone fireplaces you will ever experience.

Disability Accessible

6. Bonus Spot! Mather Point – Mather Point, located near the Grand Canyon Visitor Center is wheelchair accessible. The overlook features paved paths that are suitable for wheelchairs. The paths offer a scenic route along the canyon’s edge. They lead to the viewpoint, allowing those with a disability to capture their own photo of the Grand Canyon. Mather Point is also next to a large parking lot and disability accessible facilities.

The free shuttle buses have ramps. They also have designated spaces for wheelchairs. This facilitates transportation to various points of interest in the park.
