Opposite Seasons on Lake Michigan

Opposite Seasons on Lake Michigan

Words and Photography by Gary Donaldson

These two photos were taken from the Menomonee Marina. Menomonee sits along the western shore of Lake Michigan, looking east across Green Bay.

Looking east across Green Bay. Winter flattens the bay down to basic elements in gray—ice, sky, and a long frozen horizon that joins the two together.

The above photo was taken on a gusty, sub-zero winter day from the breakwall seen in the image below.

The photo below was taken from the Menomonee Marina shoreline wall. Jennifer and I sailed here the night before from Oconto, Wisconsin – about a 5 hour sail.

My sister once had a sailboat and kept it in the Menominee Marina. I love going there to see the boats when I visit her in Marinette. I love to imagine where all the boats are from and the adventures that they have seen on the lake.

The Menomonee Marina is a beautiful place. I have a sailboat that I currently keep in Oconto, Wisconsin. I sail to Menomonee nearly every year and spend a few days at the marina. I also sail up and down the Door peninsula and visit the picturesque little harbors. Thanks for adding to the post! I really enjoy the interaction.
