Field Notes:

A 5-mile Radius Post

Just across the road from home lies a small, glacial remnant, pothole lake. It is shallow with lily pads and bordered with reeds and cattails. From a simple ground blind, I recently spent a spring evening watching female Hooded Mergansers tend to the tasks of motherhood along the nearby shoreline.

A Female Hooded Merganser swims with her ducklings among the vegetation as she keeps a sharp eye out for danger.

With crest raised and eyes alert, a female Hooded Merganser surveys the shallows along this pothole lake.

The mother merganser trails closely behind her duckling as they cross the sunlit lake. For the next few weeks, all of life’s challenges will be met together.

A Deeper Perspective

While watching Hooded Mergansers from the blind, my attention wandered to the opposite shore. A deer emerged from the grass. And a Trumpeter Swan patrolled the shallows, keeping a close eye on his mate nested on top of an old beaver lodge.

A White-tailed Deer browses along the marsh between a pair of swans. One swan is tending to a nest built on an old beaver lodge. The other keeps watch nearer to the shore

A great evening spent on the little unnamed lake across the road.

All images captured on a Nikon Z6lll camera paired with a Nikkor Z 180-600mm lens.

So, would you have become a photographer of nature if you started all over as a young man or is this your ideal 2nd career.

Hi Marsha! If I could start all over with what I know now, I would strive to be a Travel Photographer. But, we’re talking about decisions made 40+ years ago. Back then, my strength by far was in the sciences. I ended up in the health sciences instead of what would’ve been more natural to me – earth sciences. Part of that was due to college basketball decisions. Currently, in retirement, the tagline to this blog site sums it up pretty well – Exploring the intersection of photography, travel, and nature. I’m striving for magazine level photography and writing about interesting subjects. I hope to be providing a great alternative to the garbage being put before us on TV and social media these days.

This would be a great entry for the federal Duck Stamp Contest but I think you have to paint it!

Perhaps someday when I make more time in the studio…

I’m not sure I knew what a merganser was before reading your words. The photos are wonderful Gary. They take me places I may never see in person and I’m grateful.
