A Great Lakes freighter moves along the North Shore of Minnesota. Its presence reduced to near silhouette in the early morning fog on Lake Superior. In the hush between water and sky, a low hum and trailing plume whisper of the power that moves steel and industry across these cold waters.

A century ago, this would have been an impossible photograph. Elk disappeared entirely from the Black Hills. Their return is a story of restoration, conservation, and a different relationship between people and the wild animals that share this landscape. Chester Creek Falls Last Fall I was hiking in Duluth, Minnesota and came upon this site. I snapped a quick photo with my iPhone (it was all I had at the time). I made a mental note to return with a proper camera. Well, I checked that reminder off this past weekend.
